Problem is when there is a lack of time to maintain and things end up becoming stale. In that event more exposure is not a good thing. Like for example the JaxLUG Facebook page is months out of date. What good does that do anyone? > If the maintainer needs help or input from the group then > they should ask. If we ever find out who they are. I am really starting to think someone or entity outside the JaxLUG created the JaxLUG account and page on Facebook. > Limiting the group to using only the tried and true IRC, FYI IRC channel is new, only a few months old > Wiki, or mailing list, allows exposure to only a very small fraction of > linux users in the market thus limiting the type and number of users that > you will generally attract. That might be a valid argument, but LUGs have thrived world wide long before all this social media stuff. In fact the glory years of the JaxLUG and it attending events seems to some what predate even the web site. Long ago we needed a wiki, which is hardly used. Sorry but if your not using whats available to you now, more stuff does not mean more people will be attracted or increase membership. If that were true the LUG would be very active this year with a new IRC channel and Facebook page. Thats twice what we had before, being just mailing list and website/wiki. Pretty sure Google+ within a few years will trump Facebook. If not then Google has failed miserably. However there are still others wanting in on the action. Not sure how Microsoft will like Google trumping Facebook given M$ ownership interest in Facebook. Then again whos to say M$ doesn't do their own thing, or Yahoo, or Amazon. > As a side note I cannot attend the Wednesday meetings because of a > scheduling conflict and would love to have access to a recording of the > meeting. I would not hold your breath or count on recordings of the meetings any time soon. There are just to many issues with such. First and foremost being privacy. Yes there are those like you who can't attend the meeting. But even more that could, and might not if they can just see it online later ;) Presentations and meeting notes are most always made public on the wiki. That should suffice for the most part, though clearly is not the same, and no Q & A. -- William L.
