Philip,
I have always been advised that the GEL battery is a great
performer and has greater potential life, but has a couple notable problems.

They can easily be damaged by too high a voltage, and they do not tolerate
high heat nearly as well as an AGM.
Finally, you pay a premium cost for them when calculating
the reserve power available and cost per Amp Hour. (with apology for my
not knowing Capitalization Rules <Grin>)

The Absorbed Gas Mat Battery was our choice on Angel Louise.
We seldom dishcharge them much more than 15 per cent,
and the highest discharge to date was to 40% during a several
week anchorage at the Annapolis Boat show.
It makes sense to have a good charging system and accurate measuring
ability to make your batteries last.

Lee is totally correct.
If you discharge your battery it directly reflects how long it will
last.
The shallower the discharge the longer the battery will last.
Its actually best if you never approach 50 percent

Typical VRLA Battery Cycling Ability
vs. % of typical Depth of Discharge

Typical # of Life Cycles for Battery:

Here We will assume a battery capacity of 100 Ah

Capacity Withdrawn Gel AGM LIFETIME GEL AGM

100% 450 150 45,000Ah 15,000Ah

80% 600 200 48,000 16,000

50% 1000 370 50,000 18,500

25% 2100 925 52,500 23,125

10% 5700 3100 57,000 31,000

If Edd's figures are correct:
a GEL will give you 27% more power if carefully managed, (10% discharge) and
a AGM more than double.
a GEL battery will deliver three times as much current over its life time as an AGM at 100% discharge and
46% more at 10% discharge.
Seems to me that the cost /amp of a AGM is VERY high compared to a GEL

Am I missing something here? or the figures amiss?
