Connie, each state is different with regards to the law regarding boat
registration...
It is a misnomer that many believe that being federally documented
exempts one from being registered in
a state that the boat either resides or the owner resides... one needs
to look at the laws from the state
the boat is in most of the time and be very careful to comply.
Florida gives on 60 or 90 days ( I forget which)
to register, and that inclueds Doc'd boats, with the state.. the
displaying of state boat numbers is exempt for
doc'd boats...
Many states will get a list of boats with Hailing ports in thier state
to find out if anyone is attempting to circumvent
the laws .... in some cases that person is simply using a particular
town due to its unique name or for sentimental reasons...
I came very close to having a hailing port of either SPUDS or TWO
EGG.. as both are florida towns with a post office.. honest
one is just outside Palatka on the east coast..the other out west in
the Panhandle of Florida.. otoh, I also gave a lot of consideration to
Chassahowitzka just to watch people try to figure out how to pronounce
it... Chassa-witz-ka is correct...
my first choice was Walterboro (SC) but I found out that having the
hailing port in SC would subject me to the potential for both sales
and property tax in SC...so Florida towns became my choice.. I settled
on Key West because, 1.)its a favorite place and 2.) the lettering
fits nicely on my stern.

I am not disputing your reply, but one needs to carefully look at the
exact law as pertains to your and your boat... with regards to your
choice of hailing ports.. Fed Doc'd boats are not exempt from
registering in most states, just does not have to display the boat
numbers...

It's not about the boat it's sails or rigging. It's about the freedom.

Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional,
illogical minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream
media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible
to pick up a turd by the clean end.
