So a toolbar button for the show/hide mechanism? That should be doable.

And if you don't like what's there by default, you can already create
your own default template, save it as "default.mpt" in the templates
folder, and you'll be all set and don't have to remove things you don't
want every time.

Meanwhile, the reason we have one of each types of track in the default
default template is that it communicates the features of the software to
new users. It's a quick and easy shorthand saying "these are the things
you can do with this software".

Well, you're partially wrong there. I know for a fact that for many
musicians, creating a tempo map is the first step they do for a new
project. This is done by beatmatching to an existing recorded track,
tapping in a tempo map manually, or other methods.

Thing is, tempo isn't just automation - it's the backbone of a song.
Everything else depends on tempo. It's vital functionality, it's
something that can add life to a song. Static, unchanging tempo sounds
computer-generated, and for electronic music this is often fine and even
desirable, but for many other types of music it just sounds fake. Do we
really want to hole in LMMS as a software for only certain types of
music? We should strive more towards versatility, towards a real
professional-grade DAW, and that includes being able to work with tempo
in more ways than just drawing curves...

So for this reason I feel it should be visible by default. If we have a
toolbutton for show/hide, it shouldn't be a big deal if you don't want
it - it's one click of a button to hide it until/if you need it again.
