Um... I just implemented automation recording a while ago. Just
right-click on an automation pattern, select recording, and the pattern
will record the state of the connected knob on playback. Record source
can be anything, manual changes, midi controllers, even other
controllers (try connecting a peak controller and record automations by
playing another instrument... it's fun).

Well, in a way, the addition of tempo track would not increase the
tracks at all. It'll just move the existing tempo automations on to it.
If you don't use tempo automation, you can't just hide the track.
