That was a sloopy typo....ROLL should be A1 (and teh problem persists)...Anyway, 
compiling 
import org.apache.log4j.xml.DOMConfigurator;
DOMConfigurator().configure("rolling.xml");
yields error...Any ideas, if what I am missing??
