Spoke to Brooke Selby on phone. Here's the deal. The pressroom is handled by a vendor, either the Jacob Javits Center itself or an outside supplier. The Operations staff at the convention center work with Brooke on her specs for the pressroom. Her specs are determined by her budget, and she can't exceed budget.
Brooke will decide whether the project is feasible based on these concerns: 1. Support - must have LTSP support onsite 24/7 during show. 2. Cost - cannot add to her costs. 3. Reliability - LTSP system cannot fail for more than a few minutes. 4. Vendor - pressroom vendor must be willing to go along with adding LTSP to their network. The LTSP network will be in addition to the vendor's pressroom network, not replace it. Vendor may not allow us to boot their boxes as LTSP clients. 5. Wireless - #1 request from journalists is wireless access. Additional information. Media: 180 journalists at show; 12 in press room at any given time; 50 in press room during peak times (lunch, dinner). Many want to connect their laptops to the LAN via nics or wireless rather than wait for terminal. LAN: yes; 1-2 printers on lan, orders 1 printer and adds another if demand requires it; usually 4 spare ethernet cables for folks to plug into their laptops; not sure of speed, either ISDN or T1, she's checking with Operations Computer Equipment: 5-6 dual boot PCs (Lin/Win); some version of RedHat; Operations says they can install any version of RedHat specified; 1 Mac; no idea whether switch or hub or speed of LAN Tables/Electric Service: tables cost money and have to be ordered in advance, doesn't really want to order more tables; no idea of electrical service, probably per spec, which affects budget Wireless: None. Brooke's #1 request is wireless access for pressroom. She has no budget for it. Dial-up: There are several phone lines available for dialup access. What'ya think?
