You don't need Etherboot for Sparcs. Sun boot ROMs have had network booting built-in for very long time. But you may need to ask in Sun groups for the ugly details because way back when I used a Sparc it only supported RARP for getting an address. Maybe BOOTP and DHCP are supported now. As your Sparcs die off you just need to replace them with some low Pentiums. >Can the client-side LTSP kernel work on a Sparc? Not the LTSP ones, those are built for x86. There are some ready made X servers built for Sparcs, do a search for Xkernel or follow the link from the Etherboot other links page. Since the server side is still x86, little has to change there except perhaps for the details of the diskless boot. >Say I want 20 workstations running KDE or GNOME that can still use >OpenOffice.og, Mozilla and Maple or Mathematica at a confortable speed. > >Can I do that with LTSP? What kind of hardware do I need at the server? >Feel free to use x86 hardware terms. I'm just looking for a ball-park >idea. > >Say I change that to 60 workstations. Is it still feasible? Yes, yes and yes. You just have to make sure to provision the server(s) sufficiently. LTSP experience has shown that memory and disks are the first bottlenecks you'll hit, not CPU power. It goes to show how idle modern CPUs are. And be sure to write up a web page about it when you're done so that LTSP can add another success story to their links. :-) ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.
