Well, finally I've tried with edubuntu, but I'm getting exactly the same 
problem. The installation failed (bug #159526) and I'd to run 
ltsp-build-client manually, so I'm still not sure if I'm doing something 
wrong that causes this problem.

What I did with LTSP 4.2 is a mix between IceWM and Gnome. When the 
users login, they have a IceWM environment but with Gnome desktop 
(running nautilus --no-default-window) so they have access to local devices.
