Am glad to be able to have this honest conversation ... here goes ...

I am confused as to why women think people owe it to them to encourage them and all that. Or why they don't sit down and figure out why men don't appear to need encouragement. Maybe that's why we are always ahead. I also wonder why many top chefs, hairdressers and fashion designers are men. Well, maybe you are really content to be 'secondary' so that's why you need encouragement?

Diversity is not a goal. Output is a goal. For enhancing output, I would think in terms of what each individual brings to the table. It's got nothing to do with gender, and everything to do with skills. Maybe Badru should forward the full list of questions I put forward. I think its time to take the gloves off for honest talk and stop trying to be sensitive when we are not really so ...

If you follow the link provided (http://www.kenet.or.ke/helpdesk/ articles/misc/ encourage_women_linux_howto.pdf ), you will find tips on how you can encourage the active participation of women in IT. As we all know, it is paramount to have diversity as it enhances the output of any piece of work.

More response:

I like to say that the decision to change the image on the poll website was purely yours. What i did, was to present my observation on the image the site presented in its original form. Please visit this site: http://www.answers.com/sexist for more on sexism.

As it is: "What are the *main* *factors* hampering more women from being deeply involved in IT?" and the options for responses provided, there a more questions than answers.

I am sorry but i feel you tightly packed such a complex issue. I will see the output though when you have closed the poll.

Hi All,

I agree that the image is sexist. I was myself surprised when I reached the page and did not find it in place at all. Made me understand why women like to make their own spaces, to get away from jokes that are not jokes at all (too serious to be called a joke).

However, I think that the women must also be in a position to fight against this sort of thing. Calling for it to be removed is a good first step. But for that to stop you from your objective (of voting and registering your point of view), is to give in and let it remain normal. My motto is: no excuses but again, I can easily see how this would offend.

Well maybe I should, as a male chauvinist pig, shut up now. When I one day have my sex change operation, I may be back to talk more. I wouldn't advise you to hold your breath, though.

  hi all

Invited more participants to the poll and got the following comment. It's a view that we need to take seriously also it's the first woman's view.

Comments please

Dear Badru,

I really wanted to vote in your poll but the image that i got on this site
put me off. It is inappropriate and sexist. If you (you and
collegues) are concerned, please visit this link and look at how complex
this issue is or how you can help.

Hi all

We have had an interesting online discussion on this issue on our Linux Users group and to bring some sanity we suggested an online poll. Which one of the members very kindly designed and put up at http:// www.kurup.biz

.

Right now it seems that only men are particpating though it seems light
hearted I would like to see what the results are.

So if you can please visit the site and cast your Vote. The questions
were a summarisation of the online discussions.

regards
