When you close the browser you don't get notifications that there is a
new message from someone. So when my boss is blowing up my messenger
saying that the Colo went down I have no idea unless I open my browsers
every 5 minutes. I guess I got spoiled with the BB allowing me to set
ring tones or status light indicators to flash when a new im comes in.
going to the browser defeats the 'instant' part of the concept 'instant
messaging'

Use Meebo. From the iPhone, open Safari, go to www.meebo.com, select
your network (Yahoo/AIM/MSN/GTalk/ICQ/Jabber). It works within the
browser and does not disconnect.
