depends on the connection you are on. My understanding is that 3G can
support simultaneous voice and data.

If on GPRS/EDGE, the Class of the device matters.

Class A: devices are capable of simultaneous voice and data transmission

Class B: devices support one type at a time, and switch automatically
between data and voice

Class C: devices support one type at a time, and require user
intervention to switch between data and voice

I think the iPhone is a Class C though I am not 100% sure.
