And yes.. I acknowledge that James said this is his final word but since he mentioned me by name and I am supposedly the cause of his choosing to keep silent on this topic.. I think its only fair I respond to this assertions:

this happens to be my final say on this .UG issue because the trend of emails that I have been reading have been getting more and more personal. I find it a fallacy that when one offers their position on an issue and strongly defends it, he/she is labelled all sorts of names. I was shocked to the marrow by the statement made by Noah Sematimba in his posting where he states:

I remember clearly this discussion being raised not just once but

multiple times and there being no traction. Now once again it is being
raised and made to appear as something all the community is pushing
when there has never actually been any such consensus from what I have
seen from previous discussions.

This makes me begin to question the motives of the people involved in
this and whether they are as altruistic as they try to make them seem.
***** end quote *****

And why would you reserve the right to "strongly" defend your stand while denying others the same right to "strongly" defend their stand? I believe this list is meant to encourage free and open expression of one's views. Should we thus muzzle freedom of expression of one's perceptions because those views may offend others?

Frankly my questioning the motives motives of those pushing this argument does not mean that I am accusing you or anyone else of anything. Others made posts questioning the motives of UCC on this issue and I didn't see UCC people going up in arms over their statements. If someone else were also to question my motives on my stand, I would simply defend my views and explain why I think they are wrong in their conclusion, not withdraw from the discussion. However, NOT acknowledging that people are not always as altruistic as they may appear would be burying our heads in the sand.

I stand by my statement. If this statement is a fallacy then prove it by showing how the whole internet community in Uganda has been behind this before and gotten frustrated by a few as was being insinuated by others in this thread. Just a good count of previous discussions to show who was for and against, and even this particular discussion can easily show whether there has been consensus from the broader community on this or in my very personal opinion a small bunch of crusaders trying to give the appearance of consensus by making the loudest noise.

<On a personal note>

I am surprised that as someone who has been a pillar in the internet community of Uganda for very many years and someone I have worked with for quite a good bit of that time both in and outside of the ICT area you can show such a thin skin. I am sure you have been active in many internet mailing like the IETF, the various NOGs, and you know the candour and often heated arguments that characterizes such discussions yet the members thereof do not take things personal. A friend once told me that if I couldn't take the heat I should get out of the kitchen when I was complaining about some responses I had gotten on a public mailing list when I asked a question. I never left the kitchen. I learned how to handle the heat!

As someone who at some point I am sure was told to RTFM on some mailing list earlier in your career like all of us have; How is it that you stood it then but now quickly begin claiming that someone questioning your motives has "superstitious insinuations"?

</personal note>

However for the sake of allowing this discussion to continue lest I appear to be stifling your right to express your views, I will refrain from questioning yours and anyone else's motives when it comes to this particular discussion.

Noah.
