I do agree that barlines are a nuisance and have to be, if not forgotten, at 
least used for what they are : a mere division of the sheet in more or less 
coherent cells, but of course by no means a rhythm dictate, the musical 
discourse generating its own rhtyhmical fluency.
On the other hand, I doubt very much that the sometimes erratic barring choices 
in Herr Giesbert's editions (I suppose you refer to the old Schott editions of 
Attaingnant's dance books...) were his decision to bring players to ignore the 
3/4 inner logic of some gaillardes and "actually feel the natural phrasing". In 
my opinion, it looks more like an editorial blunder. I do keep these old Schott 
books as historical relics ;-)
