No, we should have this.
FWIW I put this macro because I was not sure if the feature would converge
to a stable state, but this seems almost OK right now. Lots of people are
awaiting this feature so if we don't intent to go back, what about deleting
the old synchronous export code?
Well I can't compile my thesis with EXPORT_in_THREAD 1, due to  #6516.
I don't know if there are any other bugs in the threaded code that
would prevent my thesis from compiling.

No, we can leave it if this is a blocker of course.
