This worked beautifully, it was quite stupid of me not to think about deleting the three memoir layouts previously posted from my local .lyx/layouts directory, but doing that and using your link to get the memoir.layout has now sorted everything out.
The default home directory in WinXP is Documents and Settings/... -> a directory with spaces, is that an issue? I have not been able to figure how to change the home directory to a regular directory without spaces do you know how?
This is not an issue if you follow Ruurds instructions not to install LyXWin under a folder with spaces in its name.
The user settings are saved by LyXWin under Documents and Settings/user/.lyx, but this works fine on all Win-platforms.
