Hi Lynne, Usually, the voices download when you plug in the device to any outlet and connect it to Wi-Fi. This can be any kind of power source, such as the USB cable. In an hour or so, the voice automatically switches but if you want to go back to compact, you go into Settings>General>Accessibility>VoiceOver and tap the "Use compact voice" switch to on.
