I believe he should be able to close the current finder window, which is 
causing issues. After doing this, he can try rebooting the computer or force 
finder to relaunch itself.
To close the Finder window, try command-w. TO force Finder to relaunch, open 
the Force Quit dialog with option-control-escape, and select Finder from the 
applications in the list.
I would hesitate to write off Mavericks completely. Apple tech support is right 
in that he needs to upgrade, and these Finder hiccups are temporary and 
solvable.
