Gordon, I hesitate to suggest anything as I tend to think you will probably have investigated what follows.
Do you have an application or way of testing which applications are running and if so, if you close anything you can, do you still have the issue with the spacebar? I was also wondering if doing a re-installation of the Operating System might solve the issue.
