The thing is, the reason they are out there in the first place is that, for a little while, Apple did in fact put all the service manuals on a public FTP site. They were even in Apple's online Knowledge Base. Then, without warning, they took them all away (or at least hid them -- for a while they were still downloadable, but the directories were unlistable). So they were not leaked illegally. > Fair is fair, so lets keep it that way. If you wish to open up your > warranty Mac, feel free. Most people with in-warranty units are going to take advantage of the free service (except where their local service techs are less than competent, which was certainly the case where I used to live). But many of the older machines were intentionally tricky to get into, even just to add RAM, an easy and important upgrade for getting older machines back into service. Simply having correct take-apart instructions saves a lot of grief and broken plastic. Now, as someone suggested, if the service manuals were available for purchase, that might go a long way towards ameliorating the problem, but as far as I'm aware, Apple does not do this. (However, it's not too hard to find Apple Service CDs for sale on the Internet, so obviously some service techs are not above doing this.
