Everyone started with Pagemaker. I t was the only app available before
Quark brought out Xpress.

But who said anything about converting back to Pagemaker? If you read a
little closer, you would have seen that I was talking about InDesign.

As for money, well, as many places have discovered, like my paper, the
ROI from increased productivity and flexibility saves money. Time? The
learning period with InDesign is extremely short, given it's use of
standard Adobe interface, and it's ability to program shortcuts to
mimic Quark, Multi-Ad, etc.

All for a price that's much the same as upgrading to QXP 5.

Not so much in BC, but a lot of people I talk to from eastern chains
have converted to InDesign, and are loving it.

Aldus and Adobe aren't the same thing; when Aldus broke up, it was
split evenly between the two giants, Adobe and Macromedia. But agreed,
Quark stole a jump on everyone. Too bad they then decided to sit on
their laurels for more than a decade and watch the world pass them by.

I keep thinking about the time a few years back, when Quark announced
that it was planning a takeover bid of Adobe. It makes me chuckle when
I think of this little, one-app company, planning to go after the
world's second-largest software manufacturer. Says something about the
level of intelligence running Quark.
