But, assuming that you have a Mac running OS 9 that has USB ports, I

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case.
I stand corrected. I checked out the Canon site and found only OS X
driver software for the ip4200 printer, so I guess you are correct.
Now, if your Dad was using a Mac capable of running OS X, I suppose
you could install OS X over top of his existing OS 9, hook up the
printer to it and then let him run his existing OS 9 stuff in
Classic mode. My understanding, again perhaps flawed, is that when
you print from a Classic application running under OS X, printing is
handled on the OS X side of things. Whereas, if you reboot under OS
9, printing will be handled by OS 9 which looks to be a problem for
this printer.
Anyway, I hope you are able to work out something.

Jim, I think your solution will work. I'm running OS 10.4 on a G5
iMac, but have a Umax scanner. VueScan doesn't make a driver for it
and Umax is notorious for refusing to update its drivers. I haven't
found a way to turn on Classic Environment, except by opening an
"old" game or something. Once it's up and running, I can go into my
"legacy" folder and run the OS 9 drivers for my scanner.
The snag is, as you have pointed out, you have to have OS X on your
computer to begin with.
