Define "messed up"?
Lots of partial programs that have spread themselves around the Hard Drive. New installs fail. It always crashes at shutdown.
How'd it get that way?
I am not sure. Some of it is a build up of junk over time. Some of it is my own fault (I tried to treat it like a Mac and put programs on one virtual disk and data on another, it was always getting confused and eventually filled up one of the disks). Failed installs. The occasional crash.
Do you keep your drive files on a seperate partition?
Yes.
I'd start again unless there's alot of work on it, defragment the mac before making the hardfile, preferably after cleaning the mac of cache and rubbish files if your hardfiles live on the same partition as your system folder.
You can always make another and mount the old file as D:\ before deleting.
I will try and do this if I can find the space.
Thanks for the help,
Mark
