This is the company whose "supplied OS" matrix on their support site
still (the last time I checked) insists that all B&W G3s came with MacOS
8.5.1 :-)

However, in this case I don't doubt that it's correct.

Ouch! Put your handbag away Dave - the guy did say he's an iPod newbie :-)

Kev - you emphasise the "without too much hassle or software expense"
and I think the keyword here is hassle. I took a quick look at the Apple
support pages and I think you're going to have to upgrade to at least
10.2.8 as you pointed out. Even if your current setup did work you're
unlikely to get support from Apple if there are any problems. And as
recommended by the others I think you should go for at least Panther (10.3).

In fact, last night I found myself booting up my G3 slot-loading iMac
from my iBook hard drive (in target disk mode, because I think the logic
board has gone on the iBook - bah!) which has 10.3 on it, and even with
the slower hard drive the iMac was noticeably faster than when it was
running 10.2, which in turn is faster than 10.1.5.

Bear in mind as well that the latest version of iTunes also requires
10.2.8, so if you want to carry podcasts around with you, you'll need to
upgrade.
