My basic idea is that I could try swapping out parts to test.
I am not sure if anything else might be a suspect because I don't know a lot
about hardware - but I can take Macs apart and put them together again ;-)
There have been some good suggestions here (thanks) which I will look into.
Meanwhile I would be a grateful recipient of the IDE ribbon cable.
If I had access to other parts I have the option to switch them.
Bottom line is a wanted a better Mac for my daughter who has a 5500/225 that
takes so long to display web pages that it makes her ADSL emulate a modem!

I will gladly pay postage and a little for the time and packing.
