Well, just to keep the progress up to date: I did some playing. I installed an 128MB stick of RAM in place of one of my 64MB, taking the overall RAM up to 320MB. I also removes the secondary drive and put an IDE CDRW as the primary master on the second IDE stream. I also added the USB 2.0 card I had lying around (I asked about installing in a 9500 a while back.)
I then threw caution to the wind and did a full reinstall. After the initial reboot, I quit the additional software CD install - as it hung last time round. I simply installed the package seperately. I then started the system updates through the Software Update app. I did the 10.2.8 collective update and then did the fix noted in the Apple article I was pointed to be Ken. Prior to this I got one freeze. Post, none so far (touch wood.) I have turned all the power saving options to "never", but the Screen Effects still kicks in seemingly fine (though it did cause a bit of instability, so I may turn that off too.) So far, so good! Hopefully the extra RAM, full reinstall, and HDD is a more sensible location and such will solve the problem.
