Have you tried using the "force" version of the fsck command. I am a bit vague about the point in the OS development when this became necessary to get results but I think it may be worth trying.

ive not looked at force yet.

Might be worth a try. There is so much misinformation around concerning this but I am pretty sure using -yf as opposed to -f was the correct way to do it but others may confirm.

I am also a great fan of the safe boot to cure unknown ills. That is to fire it up holding down shift and keep holding it until you get "safe boot" come up on the screen. Then restart as normal. It apparently runs the same kinds of checks and is often (apparently) more reliable.

this ibook doesnt want to boot into safe. if i press shift on reboot it starts booting and then our lil spinny spin thing stops.

That is a worry, though it can take a very long time to look like it is doing anything. What I do is extend spacer from our hole punch and let this rest on the key and then go away and leave it to its own devices for a while, maybe make some coffee, chop some wood, inspect the garden.... probably about 10 minutes. If the spinny spin thing stopping is a genuine arresting of the process, rather than a long pause for thought, then the problem is probably going to be a tad hard to sort without Diskwarrior or other such. Will it start from the OS disc? Will it run the hardware test?
