This tends to suggest that problem isnt only related to your System
software.

IF you are 100% sure that your boot CD and optical drive are good and it
wont start from it then I would try resetting the Pram (and maybe the Power
manager if that is an option for iBooks). NV ram - isnt that something else
that could be reset?

Sometimes starting from CD can take a few attempts and patience.
If C at startup doesn't work try Setting the CD as startup disk in System
Preferences or command option shift delete at startup or maybe option at
startup and see if the CD System shows as a boot option.
