I do what John suggests. Follow his advice. If you don't want to store  
all the photos in iPhoto just delete the event after you have put the  
few you want where you want them. I usually copy the memory card to a  
folder on the desktop labeled with the date (and topic) then I burn  
that folder to a CD or DVD. So I have  backup. Sometime I delete the  
photos from iPhoto because they are not ones I would be looking at  
except in specific cases and then I go to the backup.
