#1 if i am using dialup on multiple computers, how can i share computers and Laserwriter select 310 (attached to 8100) over ethernet? now i have to switch dial up to local network manually.
There is a freeware program available from Apple called "localtalk bridge" which allows you to share a localtalk printer between computers which are connected via ethernet. The printer has to be plugged in to one of the computers, the one running localtalk bridge, and this computer has to be on all the time (at least, when you want to print!). You can download the software from versiontracker.
This will work if the computers are connected together directly using a crossover ethernet cable. If you use a router or switch or hub, you need to make sure that the hardware device supports appletalk (most don't). In my experience, Asant routers do support appletalk.
#2 On one of these lists someone mentioned a dialup router. Anyone have info and/or experience?
Don't have direct experience with dialup routers, but the same considerations apply; you want a router that supports appletalk. While some routers include a printer port and have a built-in print server, I suspect that your Laserwriter may not be happy. My old Asant router had a printer port, which worked after a fashion with an HP 4ML printer, but inconsistently. It seems that the appletalk protocol on these printers is bidirectional, while the Centronics connection only provides for commands going from server to printer.
