it's also because the old rollers get hard and aren't sticky like they once were.  
there
are a number of rubber "rejuvenators" that soften rollers etc. so that they function
again.  mcm.com i believe sells one as do many electronics companies specializing in 
parts
to repair consumer electronics.  i've used one from mcm and it was very, very effective
for a long time period.  just get some foam swabs to apply it with.
