I think there should be no restrictions on the filename. Some people compile debugging binaries and call them /usr/local/bin/perldb. Some people name their binaries after their dogs. Better to just let the user choose whatever binary or symlink they have, regardless of where it is or what it's called.

I think I've arrived at a pretty good compromise with this, in my working copy.

As I said before, selecting a directory was a horrible, confusing idea - I don't know what I was thinking with that. So the "Perl..." sheet selects a file now.

I've added a "Show:" popup at the bottom of the file selection sheet, and the file list is filtered appropriately. Files that don't match are grayed out and can't be selected. By default, the popup is set to "Files named "perl""; the other options are "Files beginning with "perl"" and "All files".

The "open" button is grayed out unless an appropriate file selection has been made.

Thanks for all of your feedback on this - the next version will be much improved, and you guys helped make it that way.
