You can easily turn VoiceOver off, if you don't want speech.  My phone doesn't 
read numbers as I dial them.   I'd rather have something that talks out of the 
box, and is what everyone else can use.  People automatically assume something 
doesn't work, because they try something and it doesn't do what is expected.  
My attitude is if something doesn't work the first time, I do whatever I can to 
make it work.
