Indeed, the smaller device and sxleeker looks are more important to me; 
compared with having the d-pad permanently accessible.

On mine I have the following options for both the Fn and shift keys:

  * Chorded - i.e. modifier and key held down at
    the same time; as an a normal keyboard.

  * Sticky - a single press of the modifier, followed
    by the right key.

  * Lock - two presses of the modifier to engage it
    permanently, until it's pressed once more.
