All of which call to mind the question "if a tree fell in the forest and
nobody was there to listen...". In this case, "if an excellently performing
product at an extrmely attractive price fell into the marketplace...". I
strongly believe Maptitude needs to make a bit more noise to stay alive.
MapInfo and ArcView have mindshare; Microsoft (with their less-than-stellar
offering) has money & market muscle. Maptitude could easily build
acceptance in a few carefully chosen market segments (real estate, retail,
etc) without betting the farm. By bringing their philosophy of affordable
data aggressively to these market segments, they would most likely grab a
fair amount of uncontested market share from their better-known competitors.

Key to your comment is "quite by accident." Same here. This is what Caliper
needs to address.

Actually there is a fairly straight forward reason why you don't see more
advertising and promotion of Maptitude. The Founder and President of
Caliper, Howard Slavin, believes steadfastly in putting the majority of the
company resources into making the product better rather than trying to
convince you and potential buyers that its better. I don't think it would
be anywhere near as good if he advertised at the level of MI or ESRI.
