I don't know if there is actually a theory described as such or just my own
impression of the prevailing view on the Marxist left that the trade union
leaders and the parties they support is what is preventing the working class
from becoming more militant, even revolutionary as predicted by our Marxist
forebears.  As you know, I associate the theory most prominently with Trotsky
who founded the Fourth International in the belief that it was poised to
replace the Second and Third Internationals in the course of the impending war.
I can see why he may have thought that based on his experience in the Russian
Revolution and the climate of the times which it in part inspired, but he may
well have revised his outlook if he had lived through and beyond the war. If
you polled most of the subscribers to the list, I think you'd find that most
share the view that, but for their Democratic and social democratic
"misleaders", the masses would be moving in our direction.  Artesian and
Charlie, for example, are poles apart on their reading of Soviet history but
they are among the loudest proponents of that view.
