It is useful to keep in mind that Marx's argument is, in part, a rebuttal to 
claims by Townsend, Malthus, etc. that workers need to be kept poor to keep 
them working. The proverbial "lash of hunger." So it is a *rebuttal to an 
immiseration theor* y. But it is a rebuttal that identifies the kernal of truth 
in the substantially false political economy.
