Mark, another factor I neglected to mention to explain the ersatz character of 
the groups aspiring to be Leninist parties to which we belonged is that they 
were mainly composed of students and intellectuals, primarily drawn from the 
New Left.  Sporadic attempts to colonize the unions met with only limited 
success.  None of the groups came close to becoming a mass left-wing party of 
the working class as in the interwar years, less for want of trying or a 
"crisis of leadership" or "Zinovievist deviations" than, once again, because of 
the nature of the period.
