The development of class and political consciousness is a gradual and uneven
process. While some may vacillate, when workers opt to desert a party which is
popularly identified as hostile to unions and social movements in favour of a
party widely understood to be sympathetic to them, their movement tends to be
permanent. All the more so in a society which has become highly polarized and
its politics more bitterly partisan.  We may be witnessing the early beginnings
of such movement in the stunning NYC and Texas results. If I believed that the
development of working class political consciousness was as tenuous and
uncertain as you suggest, I wouldn't have spent a lifetime promoting it.
