Just putting in my two cents... OpenOffice is quite an acceptable MS Office alternative, but I found editing to take twice as long in OpenOffice. This is mostly because of my grammar, and spelling mistakes - so one could argue that if I didn't make those mistakes I wouldn't cling to MS's spelling/grammar checker.
On Windows and Linux I do like OO.o - but on the Mac it is unacceptable because it is a X11 app. My wife is already switching from PC to Mac, I'm not going to throw more GUI weirdness at her and expect her to adapt. If it was native my problem would be solved - I'd just use OO.o instead of trying to load my old MS software into OS X.
