chas,

the short answer is that in my experience with linux, including mandrake's -
though its
been awhile), installer one can communicate certain parameters to the
installer,,in fact,
i've yet to run into a linux installer were one could NOT - of course, there
is a first
time for everything.

i'm not so sure i'd want to use a modern OS installer whose behavior was not
configurable.

which parms the installer will take, i am not sure of...but i'm certain this
is
a function of ubuntu,,,of course, being new to ubuntu i didnt use any and
other than
not cfging my stupid serial mouse, i hate the stinkpad trackpoint device, it
went in
like ................butta...

out...

I have only installed Mandrake once, and not a recent version, so
proceed with caution.
As a stab in the dark, can you pass an argument to the installer to
ignore that device?
Anaconda, the RH installer, has that ability in text mode. If Mandrake
uses a version of Anaconda, you might be able to pass an argument like
this:

linux modulename=off

Of course you would need to know the module name that is causing the
hang, but I think you may know it as you have determined that it is the
SCSI card module that is hanging the install process.

Or there is the "noprobe" option which requires you to specifiy what
drivers to install

linux noprobe
