What would you say is the minimum hard drive size for installation on a 3400c, and do you think these old things are worth spending the 80 bucks to replace the HD if it's too small?
Most people want a Linux install to be similar to the other two of the top three OS's out there ( Mac and Win ). Even though you can do small Linux installs, most people want a Linux install that essentially requires:
256 to 512 MB of RAM
The Linux GUI takes a lot of RAM these days. Again, there are ways to configure Linux to use less, but a modern distro out of the box will need that much RAM.
Linux uses a swap partition, and a general rule is double the amount of RAM you have, so you are looking at 500 MB to 1 GB of drive space dedicated to swap. Even if you don't start out with that much RAM, you will need to establish the swap partition that is capable of handling future RAM upgrades. Unless you are willing to backup all your data, reformat your hard drive, and reinstall the OS just to add more RAM ;)
The "Personal Desktop" install of Fedora Core 2 ( on x86 ) I did yesterday took a shade over 3 GB for the OS. I also use a /boot partition that is 100 MB.
That means you are looking at a 5 GB drive.
Again, there are ways to keep the requirements down, but that is what i see if you are looking for a modern, "Personal Desktop" system.
