But since he's using a 7-8 year old notebook with a 180MHz CPU, it's pretty clear he's not looking for a "modern" desktop system.

I have run into many people that hear the "Linux make old hardware usable" mantra, but expect an old system to run the latest distro without any compensations for the older hardware.


I did not mean to say that Linux on a 3400 was not worth the effort, but it will be more effort to the install than clicking through the buttons on the installer to get it usable. It is still old hardware, and each person has their own idea of "usable".

One of my servers is a Pentium 3/300 with 96 MB of RAM, and I retired a Pentium 1/166 server in 2004.
