Hi,

For sure, if I'm running any OS on a 68k Mac I won't be after stellar
performance. Still, as a low cost, low throughput server it's got be
more productive than having old hardware sit in the garage gathering
dust and having ants crawl through them (anyone else had that happen? -
a son of a b*tch to clean afterwards).

Any m68040 Mac is generally more than fast enough to route, NAT, serve, or any combination faster than the typical home DSL or cable modem. Any multi-slot Quadra (700, 650, 800, whatever) can handle multiple segments, meaning one for Internet, one for local network, one for wireless, et cetera. I've used Quadras like this for many years. They are extremely stable with NetBSD < 2.0.

The new YDL 4.0 only installs on NewWorld machines. I am planning a rpm
-Fvh upgrade from 3.0 to 4.0 on an OldWorld machine soon. If anyone is
interested I could post any problems or tips. Only one of our three PPC
Linux machines is NewWorld.

You'd suggest a Linux dist. instead of BSD for example? Why Linux, if you don't mind me asking? Which will I be able to get the most useful software for?

If you're looking for decently easy desktop video support, GNU/Linux has a definite advantage over BSD. On the other hand, if you want even better desktop support, use Mac OS X. If you have a New World machine, your choices are wide open.

However, if you want to run on an Old World machine, or the machine is going to run headless, BSD has some advantages. For one, NetBSD supports Old World quite well. For another, it's minimal, so there are fewer security issues. Lastly, NetBSD has GNU/Linux ABI emulation, so there isn't any software you can run on GNU/Linux that won't run on NetBSD. Also (we hope), Emmanuel Dreyfus should have working Darwin ABI emulation ready for the release tree, so in the near future, you should be able to run non-GUI OS X applications, too.
