you should find information on installing ubuntu on an old world mac.

Good to know.
But Old World Macs aren't supported by the Ubuntu install media, you can't simply stick the CD in and install. An Old World Mac won't boot off the Ubuntu install CD directly like older YDL install CD's.

The only thing that I could find on YDL4 was that they don't support
old world macs.

Which doesn't mean the binaries won't run on Old World Macs ;)
As your Ubuntu link shows, all it takes is some elbow grease.

My trick is to use a FAT or DOS partition to transfer data ( kernels and ram disk images ) between the Linux environment and the Mac OS boot environment. I had bad experiences with writing to HFS from Linux, so I am wary of that to this day.
