I work with people who have PhDs in audiology and engineers who have a sound educational background and experiments with hearing to indicate that humans cannot hear about 20kHz, i.e. a sampling rate of 44.1kHz is sufficient. Now, if you increase the bit resolution, that's something that might actually be useful!
