You are correct the MD data mechanism is not an issue. As I said, if the
disc can write at a raw 2x then the audio can be written at 10x (due to ~5:1
compression of ATRAC). The issue with that sort of high speed compression is
that it is either not going to sound very good, or it isn't going to be
cheap. Sony as per their SOP went for sound good, but cost a fortune... the
prices will go down since it is an ASIC and once they have used it in a
generation or two the cost per chip becomes insignificant. But Sony has yet
to allow for an interface other than CD->MD due to fear of reprisals from
the music industry (of which they are of course apart).
SCSI/USB/IE1394(firewire, i-wire)->MD is easy and just makes sense. But they
will not do it.
