The most important part of the exhaust system is the dump pipe.  After
the gasses have travelled 2 feet they have cooled and no longer need the
same area to travel down.  After that you can use smaller, still the
bigger the better but not as much gains as the dump pipe.  I would go 3"
to the cat then 2 1/2 or 1/4 to the back and a straight through muffler.
