Wardy,
I've had a few chats lately to one of the well known local turbo exhaust builders who built the system for my first FJ20t powered 510. That one worked a real treat so I have asked him to build much the same again for the white 510 when i get around to requiring it. The other car didn't have a cat fitted as "thems were the rules" in those days, but as that has all has changed of late with the Nat rules biting in most parts we've got to look at the system a bit differently now. Basically the only part of the DR30 system used is the dump flange which starts a 3" system to just before the rear x-member and then a 2.5" tailpipe. The quality and the positioning of the cat (I thought it's function and space availability determines where it has to go) and stainless turbosmart muffler fitted in the tailpipe section as far rearward of the axle seems to be the most important things to get right to give good results i.e. flow, noise & resonance, the later which is often overlooked if the car is going to spend some time on the freeway. His opinion is that for a street turbo 4 in the 300-350hp range is that a 3" pipe from the dump is more than ample as the text book says that the gas flow from a turbo resembles a vortex and as it cools the gas contracts and then doesn't benefit much from having an over huge pipe diameter as long as there isn't any back pressure to speak of as this is the killer of a turbo exhaust, so mandrel bends are well worth while. What this guy did with my other car was to connect a number of temperature probes along the pipe as this is the sort of thing that indicates flow characteristics of the design. A decent system to this sort of spec will cost you plenty anyway, around $1000 with a cat - ouch!

regards
terry

G'day listers, hey I just wanted a little feedback on what exhaust systems ppl are using on their turbo motors.  I went to the exhaust shop today (from what I hear, a pretty respected one in the area) to organise for a system on the 1600 when the FJ20T goes in.  They reckoned using a highflow cat converter & muffler, and use 2 and a half inch system all the way back.  I was thinking of a 3 " system but they reckoned it was un-necessary.  Experiences/thoughts ?
