My mother had a Datsun 1200 1972 sedan which did 42 mpg driven around the 
city(very carefully of course). She sold it because she was worried that it
would wear out (it had done 90,000 miles) and bought a Daihatsu Mira which
is a piece of junk and struggles to do 48 mpg and feels very unsafe. Sad but
true.
